Recent flooding in downtown Summerville has drawn the attention of local elected officials.  The heavy rains that brought on massive flooding in the area of the intersection of Commerce Street (Highway 27) and the Menlo Highway (Highway 48), damaged local businesses and some residences.

Summerville City Councilman Joe Money assembled a group of elected officials to talk about the issue.  A meeting at Summerville City Hall was attended by State Senator Jeff Mullis, State Representative Eddie Lumsden, Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry along with Councilman Money, Summerville Mayor Harry Harvey and the Summerville City Manager and department heads.

Councilman Money tells WZQZ News that the meeting was productive.

Money says that the Georgia Department of Transportation will be studying the issue and will release the findings of their study to come up with possible solutions to remedy the flooding issue that has plagued the area mentioned for decades.  Councilman Money said that one possible solution is the dredging of Town Creek to provide more capacity for water runoff.

Money says that in meantime, he has talked with area business owners and made them aware of flood insurance that is available through the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.

State Senator Jeff Mullis said, “I was glad to join elected officials and business leaders in Chattooga County to discuss ways to end the flooding in various locations once and for all. We must protect our businesses, large and small, and the citizenry at large.”

Councilman Money added that he was pleased with the results of the meeting and is looking forward to hearing back from the Georgia Department of Transportation so that local officials can develop a plan to deal with the flooding issue.
