A Georgia State Senator is looking to crack down on the “swatting calls” that are happening more and more to public officials. The criminal act of swatting is when someone places a fake emergency call, which sends SWAT teams and emergency responders to the homes of unsuspecting people.
Republican State Senator Clint Dixon of Buford, Georgia, a recent victim, has introduced a bill that would stiffen the penalties for the illegal practice. Dixon was targeted by swatting calls over the holidays. He says that an elderly family member was staying at his home while his family was out of town when the second swatting call he received came in.
U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Rome has also been a frequent victim of swatting, including an incident that happened last week.
Dixon plans to introduce his legislation with stiffer penalties for swatting when the Georgia General Assembly gathers for their 2024 legislative session next week.
