The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting that happened in Northwest Georgia late last week. According to the Georgia State Patrol, the incident started in Polk County on Friday morning when a vehicle refused to stop for a police officer in Aragon.
The vehicle was being driven by twenty-seven-year-old Shannon Thompson of Aragon. A chase ensued and the Georgia State Patrol joined law enforcement from Polk and Bartow Counties in the chase. The trooper executed a PIT maneuver causing Thompson’s vehicle to veer off the road and into a field in Taylorsville.
Thompson allegedly then drove the vehicle towards a trooper who was standing in the roadway, at which point the trooper fired shots hitting Thompson in the arm. Thompson left the field and continued to drive away. A trooper tried a second PIT maneuver and Thompson rammed the patrol car, got out of the vehicle and fled into nearby woods. Thompson was found and officers used a taser to subdue him and take him into custody.
Thompson was given medical treatment by the trooper and officers and after a medical evaluation was booked into jail. The GBI is investigating the incident.
It is the fifty-third officer involved shooting in Georgia this year.
