For some, Christmas Day is spent in a car watching other vehicles to make sure they obey traffic laws.

The Christmas holiday driving period began at 6 p.m. Thursday and ends at midnight Sunday.

Local police officers and state troopers will be watching the road looking for drunk drivers and those violating traffic and safety laws.

“We will be teaming up with other local agencies conducting road checks and concentrated patrols on state and county roads in an effort to remove impaired and aggressive drivers from our roads to make the holiday season safer for everyone driving on our roadways,” said Cpl. J.E. Massingill of the Rome Post of the Georgia State Patrol.

The Christmas holiday is not only challenging because travelers will be visiting relatives, but they will be crowding areas around malls and department stores purchasing last-minute gifts and possibly returning them on Sunday.
