A Dalton School teacher is part of a suit against state leaders saying the wording on Georgia ballots concerning Amendment One is misleading. The suit names Governor Nathan Deal, Lt. Governor Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp as defendants. The ballot asks, "Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended to allow state or local approval of public Charter Schools upon the request of local communities?" The preamble to Amendment One says it "provides for improving student achievement and parental involvement through more public charter school options." The suit was filed Monday in Fulton County Superior Court. Those filing the suit say the wording leaves out some important information. First, it doesn't tell you it takes money from public schools. Second, it doesn't tell you that it allows for-profit companies to manage charter schools. And third, it doesn't tell you these decisions will be made by an unelected commission appointed by the governor. Those who support the amendment deny that it would take money from existing public schools.
