In a called meeting on Monday, a representative of Elan Vital Design Group, inc., addressed the Summerville City Council on its transition plan in keeping with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
John Moores has been providing an assessment plan for all of the public facilities in an effort to remove obstacles for handicapped employees and the public. Moores said the largest obstacles are the internal facilities, mostly the bathroom. He said the cities has made great strides in becoming ADA compliant with outside facilities, such as parks, park bathrooms, gymnasiums, sidewalks, etc.
Moores suggests that work be done gradually as renovations are done to facilities. So far there is no federal deadline for all work to be done. If that time ever comes, however, cities found to be non-compliant will not be eligible for Department of Transportation grants and loans.
