Unemployment is at an all-time low in Georgia and here in Chattooga County as well.  The tight job market is making it harder for employers to attract needed workers.

Local governments are feeling that pinch as well.  The City of Summerville has been advertising for a variety of positions that are available for over two months now.  This past week, the city ran advertisements for police officers, a payroll clerk and a purchasing agent.  The city has also been seeking employees for the water and gas department as well.

The state has several hundred thousand job openings, according to Mark Butler, Georgia’s labor commissioner. “This is a unique and different situation. We have never had this many jobs sitting open” – and all of this while most people who are able to work are already employed.

The City of Summerville isn’t alone.  The Chattooga County Water Department, the Town of Trion and the Chattooga County School System have all been needing workers in recent weeks.
