The Celebrate Independence festivities and fireworks display were a no-go on July 4th weekend in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  But the City of Summerville is making plans for the fireworks display to return in 2021.

Almost all events that were scheduled by the City of Summerville and Summerville Main Street had to be canceled last year due to state mandates due to the coronavirus.  In 2020 the Summerville City Council first planned to have the fireworks display during the annual Chattooga County Agricultural Fair.  Then the fair was canceled.  Finally, the city was able to shoot off the fireworks in the fall, on a Friday evening following the Chattooga High School football game.

On Monday evening, the Summerville City Council set the date for the annual Independence Celebration. This year, the Fourth of July falls on a Sunday.  The council has set the date for the event for Saturday, July 3, 2021.
