The Summerville City Council met on Monday evening of this week for their regular council meeting for the month of September.  As expected, the recent Labor Day Weekend Flood and the resulting water issues with the water treatment plant were a topic of discussion.

The council heard from local business owners who are frustrated with the flooding on Commerce Street near the intersection of Highway 48.

Public Works director Terry Tinnie told the council that his department had ran cameras through the city’s drainage system and found no obstructions to prevent water draining.  With over 14″ of rain falling in some areas in Summerville in a short time period the rainfall was simply more than the drainage system could handle.  Councilman Joe Money told WZQZ News, “Our drainage system drained millions of gallons out if our town by 11:30 AM last Sunday. If our drainage system wasn’t working, that water would have been standing several days last week.”

The council also heard a report on the flood recovery progress at the water treatment plant.  The city’s three reservoirs were nearly full as of Monday evening.  City water department workers were busy gathering more sample tests on Tuesday in hopes that the city would be able to lift the boil water advisory soon.

In the mean time, Summerville City water customers should continue to boil their drinking and cooking water.  Bottled water and a water tanker are still available across from Summerville City Hall on Cox Street.
