Things got a little tense at Monday night’s meeting of the Summerville City Council after a discussion about alcohol and an entertainment district in downtown Summerville.
The idea is to have an area downtown for events where event-goers could legally have open containers of alcohol during the event time. Summerville Councilman Rickey Hughes wanted to see the council move forward with studying the idea, but Mayor Harry Harvey told council members “We won’t be voting on that this evening.”
Despite that statement from the mayor, the city attorney told council members if they wanted to have a vote, they had a right to do so.
Councilman Hughes made the motion to get public input on the entertainment district idea and it passed 4-1 with only Councilman Joe Money voting against the motion.
Councilman Hughes told WZQZ News, “t’s really just an idea that I believe would promote some restaurant development in the future and make it a little easier for the restaurant’s like during an event because they wouldn’t have to do the permitting. Something similar to what Rome did recently.”
