Summerville’s new interim city manager’s first day on the job is scheduled for today. The Summerville City Council voted to approve a contract for Andrea L. Surratt at their meeting last week.
Originally, the Summerville City Council had advertised for interested persons to submit resume’s for the interim position. The council did an about face and did not consider any of the other five candidates who applied for the interim position. Instead, they hired Ms. Surratt several days before the deadline for resume submissions for the position. Last week, they approved a contract that will pay the part-time, interim city manager around $9,800 per month for the four-month contract. According to Summerville Mayor Harry Harvey, that works out to about $75 per hour.
Mayor Harvey said that there is no particular selection process for an interim city manager, but when the council considers the full-time position they will have to follow state law which requires a month-long application process and selecting and interviewing the top candidates for the job before a decision is made.
