This year’s Memorial Day Service in the City of Summerville had an added feature. The World War I – era Spirit of American Doughboy Statue was rededicated at Veterans Park, located inside Dowdy Park. There was a good-sized crowd at the event that was held on Saturday, including veterans of World War II and children of World War I veterans.
Georgia’s Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Thomas Carden was the keynote speaker at the event.
Maj. Gen. Carden told veterans in the audience, “You are what is right about America”. He also reminded the crowd that those who made the ultimate sacrifice should be remembered more than one day a year.
In addition to World War II veterans, there were veterans of Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan in attendance at the service.
“They gave all of their tomorrows for our today,” Carden said. His challenge to the crowd was to to find a way to make their sacrifices matter on a daily basis.
