Summerville officials say that they are moving forward in a lawsuit against the manufacturers of so-called “forever chemicals” that made their way into the city’s drinking water via Raccoon Creek.
The original lawsuit was filed by Summerville resident and former city councilman Earl Parris, Jr. The suit seeks to hold the chemical manufacturers responsible. The city says that sludge spread on farmland from Mount Vernon Mills infiltrated Raccoon Creek which is where the city’s main source of drinking water comes from.
Summerville Mayor Harry Harvey told a Chattanooga TV station this week, “We’ll do everything that we can to be sure that we are in compliance and we’ll work with whoever we need to in order to do that.”
Trion Mayor Lanny Thomas says that Trion no longer allows sludge from Mount Vernon Mills to be spread on farmland. Thomas said, “The Town of Trion entered into a consent agreement with the EPA and EPD and stopped the use of agricultural application of sludge from the Wastewater Treatment Plant prior to the filing of this suit”.
