The City of Summerville is moving forward with plans for an entertainment district in the downtown area.

At Monday night’s regular council meeting the council discussed changes that would need to be made to the city’s current alcohol ordinance in order to allow for the district.  Now, the city attorney is reviewing the current ordinance and making the needed changes to present back to the council.  Once that is finished, the council will hold a public hearing on the new entertainment district.

Members of the public will have the opportunity to express their opinions about the changes to the alcohol ordinance at the meeting.

Also on Monday, council members discussed the city’s donation to the Summerville Cemetery Corporation.   The cemetery is operated by the non-profit corporation and recently many residents with loved ones buried at the cemetery have been upset with the lack of maintenance at the site.  The city currently provides $10,000 per year to the corporation for upkeep.

The council voted to remove a dead tree at the cemetery and promises to discuss the city’s contribution in the upcoming budget talks.
