Summerville Police, along with Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies and the GBI responded to a call on October 18th after a local resident found grenade inside a vehicle at a local towing company’s tow-yard.

The call came in around 6:20 PM and Summerville Police responded to Luallen Wrecker Service, located on Highway 100.  Howard Slicker told responding officers, while examining a wrecked 2012 Hyundai Elantra at the scene, he discovered what appeared to be a grenade. According to reports, upon finding the object, Mr. Slicker heard a click, leading him to fear he had inadvertently activated the device.

Following safety protocols, the suspected grenade was handled cautiously. It was reportedly wrapped in tape and submerged in a bucket of water as a precautionary measure.

The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office was notified, and Deputy Nick Robinson quickly contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Agent Pendegrass, who is specifically assigned to the GBI’s bomb squad, was dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, Agent Pendegrass conducted a thorough assessment of the object. Following his expert examination, it was determined that the grenade was not active and did not pose an immediate threat.

Agent Pendegrass then safely removed the ordnance from the scene for proper disposal.
