The City of Summerville is now accepting applications for a Cathodic Protection Technician to maintain and operate the city’s crucial cathodic protection system. This system utilizes electric current to prevent corrosion on vital underground infrastructure, particularly the city’s natural gas distribution lines.

The technician will play a key role in ensuring the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to Summerville residents. Responsibilities include maintaining cathodic protection system components, locating and repairing leaks in both main and service lines, installing and programming meters, locating utility lines, and responding to after-hours emergencies. Beyond cathodic protection, the position also involves a broader range of tasks related to gas distribution, including gas line installation, turning service on and off, inspecting and maintaining regulator stations, and delivering necessary tools and materials. The role even extends to making electrical repairs in city buildings.

The position requires an Associate’s degree or equivalent experience, along with sufficient experience (typically 1-2 years in a similar role or completion of an apprenticeship/internship) to understand the core principles of cathodic protection and related duties. Applicants must also possess, or be able to readily obtain, a valid Georgia driver’s license for operating city vehicles and equipment. The work environment is primarily outdoors, and the technician may be exposed to various conditions, including noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, and inclement weather. The physical demands of the job include frequent sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, crouching, lifting heavy objects, using tools, and climbing ladders.
