After several months of bad news in the ongoing water crisis, the City of Summerville received some good news on Friday. A test well at a location west of the water treatment facility is producing 1,000 gallons of water a minute at 364 ft. Summerville City Councilman Joe Money posted on social media, “Still alot of work to do but a great start! Thank you for your patience during this massive project.”
The city is hoping to drill wells to feed into the water treatment plant located on Filter Plant Road.
The hope is that the city can dilute the water from Racoon Creek to lower the contaminates that were found earlier this year. The city would have to pipe the water to the plant, and all of this comes with a hefty price tag for the city.
Right now, the city is purchasing water from the Chattooga County Water District which is being used for customers on the eastern side of the city’s water system. Also, the city is purchasing water from the Town of Trion to supply Hays State Prison in Pennville. The purchased water is coming with a hefty price-tag. Last month, the city ran up bills of over $30,000 to the county and Trion for water to supply to Summerville customers.
