The Georgia House passed a Sunday Alcohol Sales bill yesterday and the bill will head to Governor Nathan Deal’s desk for his signature.  Deal had already said that he would sign the bill into law if the House and Senate passed it. 

State Senator Jeff Mullis, a Republican from Chickamauga was in favor of the bill and had backed a similar bill in past legislative sessions.  Mullis said he supported the bill because it allows local areas to vote on the issue.  A review of campaign contributions given to Senator Mullis over the past several years shows that lobbyist in favor of Sunday alcohol sales have given sizeable contributions to the state senator.

In the House vote yesterday State Representative Barbara Massey Reece, a Democrat from Menlo, voted against the bill.  Reece told AM 1180 that she voted against the bill because of her upbringing and religious convictions.  Other representatives in Northwest Georgia were split on the issue with  State Representative Katy Dempsey (R-Rome) supporting the measure and Rep. Rick Crawford (D-Cedartown) voting against the measure.

Representative Reece said that while she knew the vote would pass the House she would not support the sale of alcohol on Sunday.
