Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says that there are a lot of questions about 2023 property tax bills for Chattooga County property owners. The tax commissioner has put together a quick FAQ list to help tax payers:
Q: Why have tax bills not been printed yet?
A: We use a third party printing company that can print and mail for 1/3 of the cost of doing it in house. We sped through the digest steps to get bills active quicker for those needing to go ahead and pay. We had to go back to complete those steps before sending to the printer.
Q: Why are bills due March 1, 2024?
A: We are required to give taxpayers 60 days to pay after bills are printed/mailed. It generally takes a few weeks after finalizing the digest to have this completed, and that timeline puts us close to January 1, 2024.
Q: Will I be double taxed next year?
A: No. The bill that is due March 1, 2024 is for 2023 taxes. The bill you will pay by the due date in 2024 will be for 2024 taxes. You can pay now (in 2023) toward your 2023 tax bill.
Q: When will I receive my bill?
A: We are still working to get the file to the printing company and hope to have it sent to them tonight or tomorrow morning. We will then need about a week to proof bills from them, then they will need some time to print, fold and mail the bills. Hopefully 2-4 more weeks (forgot this sentence in first post).
Q: When will I be charged interest for being late?
A: March 2, 2024.
Q: Why didn’t you just start sooner?
A: Numbers for digest/tax bills come from the Assessor’s Office. They were inundated with so many appeals this year, they had to work through one thousand of those appeals before they could send the file over to start turning the numbers into bills.
Q: What if I sold my house? Will I still get the bill?
A: Yes. We must bill properties as they were on January 1st of the tax year. We will also send the new owner a bill. Who is responsible for paying the bill depends on how it was worked out on your closing statement at the time of sale.
