Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says that if you are a Chattooga County resident and your birthday is in January or February, you may not receive a reminder to renew your tags.  Normally, the state sends renewal notices as a courtesy to taxpayers sixty days prior to the due date, which is the taxpayer’s birthday. 

Hampton said that the reason the notices won’t be going out is because millage rates have yet to be set in Chattooga County. Annual ad valorem is based on the value of the vehicle and the current millage rate set by the levying authority in that taxpayer’s district. As the millage rates are not all set yet, there aren’t any calculations for those renewals.

Hampton says, “The mailer for those is contracted by the state, and I have been advised by the state that there is no way for me to print them in house. While I will certainly try to have the notices pushed out to vehicle owners once the millage rates are all set in a few weeks, it isn’t certain if they will actually be mailed by the contractor.In short, if your birthday is in January or February, you’ll need to call, go online or come in the office to renew your tags ON OR BEFORE your birthday”.
