Chattooga County’s Tax Commissioner says that some people whose birthdays are in January may receive notices in the mail that say they don’t owe anything for their annual vehicle registrations – but those notices are in error.

The state has printed the notices with a $0 balance because local municipalities have not completed their millage rate process.  That is because of the assessment issue earlier this year.  Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says it’s not the fault of the local municipalities because they didn’t have the numbers to set their rates until recently.

The tax commissioner says that she is checking with state officials to find the best way to handle the notices that have gone out in the mail.  In the meantime, if  your birthday is in January, you will still need to renew your tags – even if you get a mailer that says you have a $0 balance.
