As the Georgia Legislature wrangles with the overhaul of the state’s antiquated tax system, some unlikely political alliances are forming. The Georgia Democratic legislators are standing firm against the plan – saying that the increase in fees and taxes on goods and services will not balance out against the proposed income tax cut that the state GOP leaders are pushing.
Democrats aren’t the only ones saying the plan is not a tax cut – but instead a tax increase. The TEA Party of Georgia has called the plan a tax increase. State Representative Barbara Massey Reece has said that the GOP backed plan taxes the working class in order to provide tax breaks for the wealthy.
Add to the mix of Democrats and TEA Party members – the Georgia Baptist Convention. The state’s largest religious group is opposed to the plan because it does away with a tax break for charitable donations.
