A Chattooga County man was arrested on outstanding warrants while working his shift at the local McDonald’s last week, and now faces an additional felony charge after deputies allegedly discovered methamphetamine in his pocket during the arrest.
Alton Zollie Smith, 43, was taken into custody without incident on the evening of June 25 at the McDonald’s located at 11240 Highway 27, according to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest was a joint effort between the Sheriff’s Office and the Summerville Police Department after an officer received a tip that Smith, who had two outstanding warrants, was working at the restaurant.
According to the arresting deputy, a search of Smith’s person was conducted following the arrest. During the search, the officer felt a “‘crunchy’ type material” in Smith’s cargo pocket. When asked what the object was, Smith reportedly claimed it was “earbuds.”
However, upon removing the item, the officer found a black bag containing a substance that Smith then allegedly admitted was methamphetamine.
The report states the bag contained three smaller, separate bags of a crystal-like substance and a red straw with residue. The substance later field-tested positive for methamphetamine. The evidence was secured and will be sent for further laboratory testing.
Smith was charged with Possession of Methamphetamine. He was transported to the Chattooga County Jail, where he was booked on the new charge in addition to his outstanding warrants.
