Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th, and while it is the day set aside to commemorate when Betsy Ross made the first United States Flag, and was recognized as such back in 1777 by Congress, it is not an official Federal holiday.

Banks and the post office will be open today, but Americans are encouraged to honor the Stars and Stripes by flying the flag today.

In 1885, a school teacher named Bernard J. Cigrand encouraged his students to reflect on the symbolism behind the American flag.

Eventually, he came up with a proposal to establish an annual observance for the nation’s flag and penned an article called the “Fourteenth of June” in the Chicago Argus newspaper. To this day, he is regarded as the “Father of Flag Day.”
