National Hire-A-Veteran Day is today, July 25, the day that recognizes an on-going initiative to connect our nation’s veterans with employers across the country. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service helps to prepare America’s veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses for meaningful careers through its many programs and initiatives.
Some of the programs available include:
The Off-Base Transition Training pilot program is an opportunity for veterans, veterans currently serving in the National Guard and Reserve, and their spouses to take control of their career through workshops to help meet their employment goals. Free workshops combine the skills learned in service and as a spouse with Department of Labor-taught employment fundamentals. Virtual courses can be taken from anywhere and built to fit a veterans schedule. Workshops include a number of topics to include résumé essentials, interview skill-building, creating LikedIn profiles and performing job searches, as well as how to market yourself.
Through the Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans Act of 2017 (HIRE Vets Act), the Secretary of Labor established a program that recognizes employer efforts to recruit, employ, and retain veterans. The HIRE Vets Medallion Award is the only federal-level veterans’ employment award that recognizes a company or organization’s commitment to veteran hiring, retention, and professional development. Employer-applicants meeting criteria established in the rule receive a “HIRE Vets Medallion Award.” Last year, over 800 employers nationwide were awarded a medallion. In 2021, 173 employers in the Southeast were recognized for their commitment to hiring veterans and enhancing their professional development.
Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program
The Homeless Veterans’ Reintegration Program is an employment focused competitive grant program of the Department of Labor. It is the only federal grant to focus exclusively on competitive employment for homeless veterans. On July 1, 2022, DOL-VETS awarded approximately 160 grants nationwide worth $57.5 million.
