This has been an unusual year in many ways.  The COVID-19 pandemic has affected many areas of our lives, including how we are doing politics in this election year.  The Presidential Preference Primary was intended to be held in March in Georgia, then it got postponed to May when the Primary Elections would be held.  Then, that got moved to June.  If you aren’t registered to vote, today is the last day you can register if you want to vote in the June 9th Primary Election.

June 9th will be the day that Summerville voters will also be voting in a special election to fill the seat of Buddy Windle who resigned in December of last year.

In county-wide races, there are no contested positions on the Democratic Ballot.  Three local Democrats are running unopposed: Earl Rainwater for Coroner, Eddie Elsberry for Chattooga County School Board and Jimmy Holbrook for Chattooga County Commissioner.   If you want to vote in contested local races, you will need to choose a Republican ballot.  There you will find the probate race between Republicans Teresa Pope, Gary Woods and Derick Ekroat.  Also, there are three people running for County Commissioner: Incumbent Commissioner Jason Winters, Blake Elsberry and Jeff Coley.  There is also a contested school board race to replace John Agnew who chose not to run this election.  B.J. Montgomery and Chad Dodd will be facing off for that seat.

Chattooga County has 14,164 registered voters and 800 voters have already cast ballots in the June 9 Primary so far, according to the Chattooga County Registrar Office.  The last day to request an Absentee by Mail ballot is June 5. Ballots have until June 9 at 7 pm to be received by the Chattooga County Registrar Office.
