A tragic two-vehicle collision Tuesday evening claimed the life of a 15-year-old Armuchee High School student and left two others injured. The crash occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m. at the intersection of Georgia Loop 1 and Calhoun Road, according to the Floyd County Police Department.

The victim has been identified as David Clemones, a 15-year-old student-athlete at Armuchee High School. Clemones was a passenger in a red Chevrolet pickup truck involved in the collision and passed away from his injuries.

The driver of the red pickup, a 16-year-old student-athlete also from Armuchee High School, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to Atrium Health Floyd and has not been publicly identified by authorities.

A third vehicle, a Dodge Ram, driven by Matthew Mathis, 56, of Rome, was also involved in the crash. Mathis was taken to Atrium Health Floyd for treatment of injuries that were also reported as non-life-threatening.

Preliminary reports from the Floyd County Police Department indicate that the 16-year-old driver of the red Chevrolet pickup turned left in front of Mathis’s Dodge Ram, leading to the fatal collision.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and charges are pending its completion.

News of Clemones’ death has sent shockwaves through the Armuchee High School community. School officials and community members have expressed profound sadness at the loss, remembering Clemones as a dedicated athlete and a cherished member of the school.
