A tri-state memorial to honor fallen police officers is gaining ground, according to three of the event’s organizers Becky Jackson, Shannon Goins and Chad Spraggins.
These are three of several local and state law enforcement personnel that are trying to create a regional program that honors officers that lost their lives in the line of duty.
The U.S. Marine Corp Silent Drill Platoon out of Washington D.C. will fly down to participate in the program and a Blackhawk helicopter fly over are just two parts of that ceremony planned for 2 p.m. May 15 at the Trion Bulldogs stadium.
The Georgia State Patrol Honor Guard, the Chattanooga Police Department and other agencies are slated to participate in the event.
The goal is to start the memorial service in Trion and let it rotate each year to a different department in the Tri-state region.
“As you well know, being a department head in a law enforcement agency is extremely demanding and has many challenges, however nothing can be more challenging than dealing with the loss of one of your own. Unfortunately in recent years we have seen an overwhelming increase in law enforcement deaths. Whether it is vehicle accidents or a deadly assault, a startling number of brave men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting others. I feel that while mourning the loss of our brothers and sisters, it is our obligation to show our support for their families and loved ones,” according to a letter being sent out to various law enforcement officials in the region. “I am contacting you and your Agency to welcome your participation in this event. If your Agency has lost a brother or sister, this will be an opportunity for recognition of their service. This will also be an opportunity to recognize the family of the fallen for their immense sacrifice. This service will also serve as a platform for recognizing and presenting awards to officers that have proven and continue to prove their dedication to duty and public safety.”
