As of late Tuesday afternoon, there were no plans to delay the trial of Elaine Wilkins that is taking place this week in Chattooga County Superior Court because of impending snow.

Jurors are expected to arrive at the Chattooga County Courthouse to continue the trial which began yesterday.  Wilkins is standing trial for the murder of her boyfriend Robert "Bob" Packer in June of last year.  She is being represented by Public Defender David Dunn.  District Attorney Herbert "Buzz" Franklin is prosecuting the case before Judge Kristina Graham.

Yesterday during opening arguments, Franklin painted a picture for the jurors of  Packer and Wilkins drinking heavily at the time of the murder.  He explained that Packer had been shot five times with his own Colt .45 revolver by Wilkins and told the jurors that medical examiner testimony would reveal that the shooting was indeed murder.  The defense told the jurors that they don't disagree with the prosecutor's determination that Wilkins shot Packer, but that she did so in self-defense, because he planned to kill her along with others.

While addressing the jurors yesterday, Dunn said that on the day of his death, Packer had told Wilkins that he was going to kill several people.  The defense said that Packer had a plan to kill the man who had made a deal to purchase his property along with local attorney Albert Palmour and his secretary because he was "nursing a grudge" over the deal.  Dunn then told the jurors that Packer told Wilkins that he would have to kill her as well because "she knew too much."  Dunn said that when Packer went to his truck to get his gun, forgetting that he had left his gun in the house under his pillow.  When he walked back in, he asked Wilkins where his gun was and she replied "Right here" and then shot him.

Dunn said that it was a case of "shoot or die" and that Wilkins is not guilty of murder.

The prosecution began calling witnesses yesterday.

We will have more on the Wilkins murder trial in upcoming newscasts.
