The Town of Trion officially dedicated a new public park this past Saturday, transforming a historic area known as The Triangle into a vibrant community space and welcoming gateway. The park honors the late Fay and Sue Hurley, longtime business owners in Trion, whose family generously donated the land.
The dedication ceremony, held on a beautiful day, was attended by Mayor Lanny Thomas, Mayor Pro-tem McGraw, members of the Trion City Council, and numerous community members. The event marked the culmination of a five-year journey to bring the park to fruition.
Barry Hurley, speaking on behalf of the Hurley family, expressed his gratitude for the community’s support and the park’s realization. “Thanks to Mayor Thomas, Mayor Pro-tem McGraw, the City Council of the Town of Trion and everyone who came out for the Park dedication on this beautiful day. Also a big thank you to Brock Corbin for designing the park and to the teachers at Trion City Schools who dedicated the area to Brinley Corbin. What a wonderful spot. Trion and Triangle Shopping Center was a great place to grow up,” Hurley shared in a statement.
Mayor Lanny Thomas recounted the origins of the park’s creation, which began nearly five years ago when the Hurley family had placed a ‘for sale’ sign on the property. “I asked Barry Hurley if he could give Trion first bid opportunity to purchase the property. He later returned my call after speaking to his brother and sister. He stated they would like to donate the property if Trion promised to turn it into a park,” Mayor Thomas recalled.
The Hurley family’s act of generosity came with the condition that a park be established in the area and dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Hurley, ensuring their legacy as integral members of the Trion business community would live on.
The new park signifies a profound transformation for The Triangle, an area rich in Trion’s history. Once a bustling retail hub that also housed the Trion Post Office, its landscape has evolved dramatically over the years. Today, the area hosts modern facilities like the Advent Health facility and a First National Bank branch within the former shopping center footprint, and now, this beautifully designed public park.
Viewed as more than just an added amenity, the Fay and Sue Hurley Park is envisioned as a beautiful new gateway and entrance to the town, offering a serene and inviting space for residents and visitors alike for generations to come.
