The Trion Town Council voted unanimously on Tuesday evening to lease the former Trion Kindergarten Building to African American Culture, Inc. to develop a museum, similar to the African-American History Museum in LaFayette. 

African American Culture, Inc. was founded by Tracey Chaney and the board of directors includes Billy Smith, Maurice Chaney, Bishop V.T. Harden, Kenneth Chaney, Lamonica Watkins and Judge Jon Dennis.

Plans for the building include an area for refreshments, reflection and reading called “Heritage Brew & Bites” along with a gift shop and exhibit room.  African American Culture, Inc. says, ” We acknowledge that our history is interconnected with others. It’s a reminder that African American history is a vital thread in the broader tapestry of our shared heritage. It’s essential to tell our story from the African American perspective because, historically, our community’s narratives have often been one-sided, primarily from a white perspective. This omission has left gaps in our understanding of the rich tapestry of our history. By starting with the African American narrative, we’re not just celebrating our unique contributions and experiences, but we’re also addressing a historical imbalance. It’s about giving our community’s history the depth and diversity it deserves. This approach doesn’t exclude others’ perspectives; it simply means that we’re starting from a place that has been underrepresented for too long. As we expand to include Native American and other narratives, we create a more complete, inclusive, and accurate portrayal of our shared heritage. Ultimately, it’s about rectifying historical biases, promoting unity through understanding, and ensuring that every voice and perspective is recognized and valued in our community’s story”.

Trion Mayor Lanny Thomas told WZQZ News, “The lease agreement between the town and the African American Culture, Inc., that was unanimously approved by town council, allows AAC to lease the building, that was once the kindergarten building, for $1.00 a year. AAC will, in my opinion, develop a wonderful museum. This will not only be a tremendous educational opportunity for the people of Trion, it will be available for everyone in the county and surrounding area”.
