House Bill 451, known as the Ashley Wilson Act, will allow Georgia’s first responders to receive PTSD treatment coverage starting in 2025.

The act was influenced by Ashley Wilson, a former Gwinnett County police officer, whose partner was killed, leading her to experience PTSD and high medical costs.

Emergency first responders, including law enforcement, firefighters, and paramedics/EMTs, who are diagnosed within two years of a traumatic event may qualify. They can receive a one-time payment of $3,000 for treatment or long-term disability for up to 36 months at 60% of their salary, while volunteers receive $1,500 monthly.

At their December meeting, the Trion Town Council has approved insurance for employees as required by the new law, effective January 1, 2025.
