Once again, local residents are being reminded that it is illegal to burn man-made materials in Georgia.  The Trion Fire Department responded to an illegal burn on Rose Circle in Trion over the weekend after a property owner was found to be burning a large pile of trash.

In Georgia, It is illegal to burn household garbage. Maximum fines can be may be up to $25,000 per day per violation. Open burning is a prohibited act under both the Georgia Comprehensive Solid Waste Act and Rules and the Georgia Air Quality Act and Rules.

It is unlawful in Georgia to burn man made materials such as tires, shingles, plastics, lumber, or household garbage, even in a burn barrel.

The Georgia Rules for Air Quality (391-3-1-.01(tt)) define open burning as any outdoor fire from which the products of combustion are emitted directly into the open air without passing through a stack, chimney, or duct. Such burning releases smoke, oxides of nitrogen, and other pollutants that have a negative impact on Georgia’s air quality.
