A Trion man was arrested last Thursday night on charges of driving under the influence of multiple substances after a routine traffic stop escalated to a an impairment investigation, according to police reports. Taylor Ross Demott, 24, faces charges including DUI-Multiple Substances and other traffic offenses.

The incident occurred around 10:46 PM on Thursday, July 24, 2025, when Trion Police Officer Claxton initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for failure to use a turn signal. During the initial interaction, Officer Claxton reportedly detected a strong odor of marijuana emanating from Demott’s vehicle.

Upon questioning, Demott allegedly admitted to Officer Claxton that he had smoked an entire “blunt” of marijuana and consumed three beers prior to getting behind the wheel. Due to the suspected impairment, Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Villagomez and K-9 Deputy Robinson were requested to assist at the scene.

According to Cpl. Villagomez’s report, he also observed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on Demott’s breath, in addition to the marijuana odor from his person. Demott consented to a series of field sobriety tests. During the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) exam, Cpl. Villagomez noted all six possible clues for impairment. The Walk and Turn exam revealed two clues, including an incorrect number of steps and failing to touch heel-to-toe.

Officer Claxton also located a clear plastic baggie containing suspected marijuana inside a cigarette packet, which was recovered from the vehicle.

Based on the observations and test results, Demott was placed under arrest. He was read the Implied Consent Notice for suspects over 21, and he agreed to a blood draw. The blood sample was collected by EMT Clyde Patterson at EMS Station 12. The suspected marijuana was seized and placed into evidence locker #6 at the Sheriff’s Office.

Taylor Ross Demott was subsequently transported to the Chattooga County Jail, where he remains booked on the aforementioned charges.
