The pickup truck that was involved in an accident at the Chattooga County Courthouse and Registrar Office on New Year’s Eve was stolen, according to Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader.

Sheriff Schrader told AM 1180 on Wednesday afternoon that his department was in the process of obtaining warrants for the theft of the pickup truck.  Investigators believe that Michael Joe Womack stole the truck from a Walker Street, Trion residence earlier on New Year’s Eve.

Summerville Police say that Womack was driving the pickup truck at speeds in excess of 90 miles-per-hour on Commerce Street before he lost control of the truck and crashed through the wrought-iron fence on the east side of the Chattooga County Courthouse.  Womack then crashed into the brick wall on the side of the Chattooga County Registrar Office.

Womack is facing charges in connection with the accident from the Summerville Police Department and will be facing charges of theft of  a motor vehicle by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department.
