U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan announced he will resign as the chief federal prosecutor for the Northern District of Georgia, effective Jan. 19.

Buchanan, who was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate, assumed the role in May 2022. He has overseen the district’s prosecution of violent crimes, drug trafficking, cybercrimes, civil rights violations, and corruption cases during his tenure.

In a message to his office, Buchanan thanked his colleagues and highlighted their efforts to advance safety and uphold the rule of law for the district’s nearly 8 million residents.

“The Northern District, the State of Georgia, and the United States are safer because of your efforts,” Buchanan said. “It has been the privilege of my life to serve with you as colleagues, and I am forever grateful and honored to call you my friends.”
