Dr. Gary Voccio with the Northwest Georgia Department of Public Health says that while we are still in flu season, the cases of flu are relatively low in the ten-county region that includes Chattooga County.

Voccio said, “We have seen forty-six flu-related deaths in Georgia related to flu.  Twelve of them were between the ages of fifty and sixty-four and thirty-two people over the age of sixty-five have succumbed to flu”.  Voccio said nationwide, over 18,000 people have died from the flu this flu season.  He says that anyone over the age of six months should get a flu vaccine.

While wintertime is when we normally think of flu season, Dr. Voccio says that flu can come back at any time.  Last summer there was a wide case spreading of the flu.

Dr. Voccio says that COVID-19 cases are very low at this time, but COVID-19 is “still out there”.  He said that there are a few hospitalizations, but he number of people with the flu right now are much higher than the number of people with COVID.
