During the night, 20,000 North Georgia EMC members lost power due to extensive damage to the electric system caused by the winter storm. Crews worked through the night to reduce the outage number to less than 8,000 by daylight. As trees weighed down by snow and ice continue to fall, outage numbers are steadily increasing again. As of 10:30 a.m., approximately 14,000 members are without power.
“Personnel have worked tirelessly through the night and will remain on duty until all power is restored,” said Jeff Brown, NGEMC’s vice-president of operations. “We are working as quickly as conditions will allow. Unfortunately, new outages continue to occur. We appreciate everyone’s patience and the many words of support offered to our crews.” Brown added that windy conditions forecasted for this afternoon could make conditions worse. Outages may be extended due to the magnitude of the damage.
To report outages, call your local NGEMC office or use the NGEMC mobile app. Hold times are longer due to extremely high call volume. Stay away from fallen power lines and assume that all fallen lines are energized. Report them immediately to your local power company or call 911.
North Georgia EMC provides electricity in Catoosa, Chattooga, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Walker, and Whitfield counties.
During winter storms and power outages, residents should use the following safety measures:
- Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately to your local power company or call 911.
- Never assume a downed line is not energized.
- Follow manufacturer safety precautions when using a supplemental heat source or power supply.
- Generators should have a working power transfer (double-pole or double-throw) switch to isolate the power source from your power provider's distribution system. This safety switch is vital for the protection of line workers and the public.
