Being bored does not mean you can do whatever you want — but that’s the reason given by two teenagers caught vandalizing the old LaFayette High School.

The suspects were arrested after police responded to a burglary at the former high school located off North Cherokee Street in downtown LaFayette.

The incident report states that at about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, Travis Scott Richardson, 17, of Rocky Face, and another juvenile forced their way inside and sprayed fire extinguishers throughout the building.

The responding officer was dispatched to investigate a burglary alarm in the 300 hall and old band room. Upon arrival, he noticed a large amount of smoke or fog in the walkway on the east side of the building near the administration offices. The officer saw two males run across the walkway and look back at him as he got out of his patrol car.

The officer caught the teens and handcuffed them. Another officer arrived and placed the two suspects in his vehicle.

The LaFayette Fire Department responded to the smoke, which was determined to be the contents of fire extinguishers.

Several fire extinguishers were discovered on top of a door awning at the north wing of the east end of the building across from the administration offices. Richardson and his juvenile accomplice admitted to the crime, saying, “We just got bored and wanted to have some fun.”

Richardson said they climbed onto the roof and crawled through a busted out window to enter the building.

The arresting officer contacted the juvenile’s guardian and advised them to pick him up at the police department. The juvenile was released to his guardians after a juvenile complaint was filed against him with the Department of Juvenile Justice.

Richardson was placed under arrest and transported to the Walker County jail.

There, he was charged with burglary, felony interference with government property and obstruction of an officer.
