An impending arctic air mass set to sweep into Northwest Georgia this evening is drastically impacting local Veterans Day observances, leading the City of Summerville to postpone its annual parade. However, community events honoring veterans will proceed indoors as scheduled on Tuesday, November 11th.
Forecasters predict that the arctic blast will drop temperatures to dangerously low levels by Tuesday morning, lasting into midweek. In response to the extreme cold, the City of Summerville officially announced the postponement of the Veterans Day Parade, originally slated for Tuesday, November 11th, until a later date yet to be determined.
Despite the frigid conditions outside, organizers confirm that the annual Veterans Day event at the Chattooga County Memorial Home will go on as planned. Local veteran organizers Barbara Massey Reece and Odell Anderson stressed the importance of maintaining the gathering.
“Although it will be cold outside, we will be warm at the Memorial Home for our Veterans Day lunch,” Reece told WZQZ News, ensuring veterans and their families that they can still gather in comfort.
Special Recognition Slated for Vietnam Veterans
The Memorial Home event, a long-standing staple of community support, is scheduled to begin promptly at 12 Noon. While all veterans are highly encouraged to attend, this year’s program holds special significance with a dedicated recognition ceremony focused on honoring Vietnam War veterans.
The short program preceding the meal aims to formally remedy the lack of appreciation many Vietnam veterans endured upon returning home decades ago. During the solemn ceremony, qualifying Vietnam veterans will be presented with official Honor Certificates of appreciation from the State of Georgia, alongside commemorative certificates and pins. This presentation serves as Chattooga County’s formal token of deep respect and acknowledgment of their service and sacrifices.
Community Support Powers the Event
The success of the Veterans Day Luncheon is driven entirely by dedicated local volunteers and the generosity of community sponsors. This year’s event is being supported by VFW Post 6688 and Auxiliary, United Community Bank, and Tractor Supply.
These sponsors and volunteers look forward to greeting all attending veterans and their families, offering a moment of sincere thanks and camaraderie. Following the recognition ceremony, attendees will share in a communal meal, providing a crucial opportunity for veterans to connect with one another and for the community to express its gratitude directly.
Organizers Barbara Massey Reece and Odell Anderson encourage all veterans and supporters to arrive early to ensure ample time for socializing and connecting with fellow veterans and supporters before the formal program kicks off at noon.
