A large crowd turned out Saturday morning for the dedication of the New Veterans Memorial Park inside Dick Dowdy Park in Summerville. The ceremonies started at 11 AM with Rev. Jimmy Bryant, retired pastor and current Summerville City Concilman leading in prayer.
The members of the Veterans Memorial Park Committee were recognized, they included: Sam Finster, Sewell Cash, Herb Skelton, Bobby Allen, Edward Lee, Willie Joe McGraw, Carl Morrison, Bill Tutton and Marcellus Yancey.
Don Groce sang the National Anthem and the Americal Legion Honor Guard Post 5 Raised the Flags. There was a recognition of WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam servicemen that were killed in action.
The main speaker for the event was retired U.S. Marine Corps Retired Colonel Jimmy Linderman of Summerville.
The new Veterans Memorial inside Dick Dowdy Park are a stunning reminder of the sacrifices made by Chattooga Countians for the United States, their families and Chattooga County. The organizers are to be commended for a beautiful memorial that will serve as a reminder for generations to come of the heroic bravery of Chattooga County’s Veterans.
