It’s that time of the year when one of Georgia’s most famous crops begins making its way to the grocery shelves across the country – it’s Vidalia Onion Season!

You might notice this year’s Vidalia Onions are a bit smaller than usual.  Georgia’s onion farmers say that’s because of cooler-than-normal weather that has stunted onion growth, meaning the average onion may only be 3 inches around instead of 4 inches.

There is a good crop of Vidalia Onions this year but you might pay a bit more for them.  That’s because demand is high as more people are cooking at home due to the pandemic.  Also, Texas sweet onion farmers had a bad winter and crops were damaged.

If you ordered Vidalia Onions from the Chattooga Young Farmers for their annual fundraiser, those onions will be here this week.  Young Farmer Coordinator Lauren Jarrett says that the Vidalia Onions will be passed out at Pine Ridge Outdoor Supply in Lyerly Thursday, May 6th and Friday, May 7th from 8 AM until 5 PM for those who ordered the onions earlier this year.
