A Walker County Ambulance Driver who fell asleep at the wheel while transporting a patient to Rome in October of last year has been diagnosed with a disorder which can cause him to unexpectedly fall asleep according to Walker County Coordinator David Ashburn.
The county is being sued by Terri Payne of Rome who received serious injuries after an accident in which an ambulance driven by Gearld Zinger of the Walker County Ambulance Service crossed the road on Highway 27 and struck her car near Armuchee High School. Zinger told police at the time of the accident that he "didn’t remember what happened."
Payne is recovering from serious injuries related to the accident and her family is suing Walker County. Zinger has been put on EMT duty and will no longer be allowed to drive an ambulance for Walker County.
