At their meeting last Thursday evening, Walker County Commissioners voted to cut the annual county supplement for Sheriff Steve Wilson. Sheriff Wilson said he was surprised by this decision, as he received no prior notice that it would be discussed.

Commissioner Brian Hart mentioned that Sheriff Wilson’s salary has already increased by nearly six percent due to a state cost of living adjustment and a longevity clause from his recent re-election. Hart noted that if the supplement were included as before, it would lead to nearly a ten percent raise for the sheriff.

Sheriff Wilson has served as Walker County Sheriff since first being elected in 1997.  He will begin his eighth term in January after receiving almost 75% of the vote in the May Republican Primary.

Sheriff Wilson responded that it’s not just about the money but how the situation was handled, stating it does not make him feel good.  The move by the county’s commissioners will mean the sheriff will no longer receive a $5,850 supplement previously provided by the county.
