A Walker County grandmother accused of leaving her infant grandson in her car for several hours – and later finding him dead – has now been arrested. Barbara Michelle Pemberton is accused of visiting friends in the Fairview community, leaving the 13 month old child alone in the car, with the heater running for a period of around five-and-a-half hours.

Shadoe Braxton Pate was pronounced dead at Hutcheson Medical Center.

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wislon said temperatures in the car hit more than 100 degrees

The 47 year old grandmother was watching the child while the mother was at work.

Pemberton was charged with second degree murder and second degree cruelty to children.

She is currently being held on $100,000 bond.
