Later this week, the Walker County Commission will hold a special called meeting concerning what is being termed “Mega-Poultry Operations.”

Poultry farming is extremely important to Georgia’s economy.  Georgia is the top-producing broiler producer state in the nation and consistently ranks in the top-five producers of eggs.  But commissioners in Walker County say that the poultry operations that have their eye on locating in Walker County are not family farms.  Reportedly, there are “a number of poultry operators looking for sites in Northwest Georgia”, according to the Walker County Commission.

The commissioners are considering adopting a temporary moratorium on the ultra-large poultry operations.

Commissioners say that these operations are “not consistent with the family farm operations that have been common in Walker County.”

A called meeting to consider the moratorium will be held at the Walker County Civic Center this Wednesday,  June 23rd at 7 PM.
