Walker County has made important changes to improve vehicle management after a fire truck crash last month. Justin Luce has been appointed as the new fleet manager, and a new countywide vehicle operation policy has been established.
These updates were shared during a commission meeting following an incident last month where a fire and rescue truck overturned and burned while a county mechanic was test-driving it. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the truck was destroyed, revealing serious issues with vehicle oversight. It was found that the truck had inadequate insurance, a problem linked to past administration decisions.
Further investigation showed that the mechanic did not have the right license to drive the fire truck, and a former employee claimed the truck’s brakes had failed before the incident. Both the mechanic and his supervisor were fired after this event.
Community concern led to the implementation of a new policy requiring the Human Resources Department to check drivers’ licenses regularly to ensure only qualified personnel operate special vehicles like fire trucks. Additionally, financing for a replacement ladder truck, costing nearly $1.5 million, has been approved, with a five-year payment plan through the Bank of Lafayette at a 2.75% interest rate. Details on payment funding were not disclosed.
