Some Walker County property owners could see a tax hike after the Walker County School Board decided not to roll back the millage rate for its portion of the 2021 property taxes.
In a press release, the Walker County Board of Education pointed out that they were not technically “raising taxes”, because the millage rate is not being increased. Instead, the board is leaving the millage rate at 17.404 mills, the same as 2020. However, property values have increased for many property owners in Walker County.
Property taxes in Georgia are calculated using the millage rate which is the amount per $1,000 used to calculate property taxes. The millage rate is multiplied by the taxable value of the property to calculate the amount of property tax owed; the homestead exemption reduces this amount. The total value of a county’s taxable property comprises the tax digest.
The Walker County School system’s portion of the property tax for 2021 will be $23.5 million, about $2.9 million more than last year.
