The Superintendent of Walker County Schools, Damon Raines, has alerted everyone about a cybersecurity issue involving the district’s Student Information System vendor, PowerSchool. This incident occurred on December 28, 2024, when PowerSchool discovered unauthorized access to customer data through their support portal.

Raines informed families and educators of the situation on January 7, 2025, assuring them of the district’s transparency and commitment to keeping them updated.

PowerSchool reported that the unauthorized access was due to a compromised credential, allowing some data related to families and educators to be viewed. No other products were affected, and the issue has been contained. PowerSchool has implemented a password reset and tighter access controls, and they plan to offer credit monitoring for adults and identity protection for minors. They will also provide a communication package to help schools address community concerns and host webinars for further discussion.
