Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host The Nature of Battle, a special hour-long walking tour on the Chickamauga Battlefield. The tour will begin and end at Tour Stop No. 2, Battleline Road, located south of the battlefield visitor center, on Friday at 6 p.m. Follow the special event signs from the Visitor Center to Tour Stop No. 2.
The American Civil War was the most environmentally destructive war ever fought in North America. Thousands of acres of fields and forests were turned into wastelands in the wake of advancing armies.
A park ranger will take participants for a walk through part of the battlefield to learn how geography and nature impacted the soldiers fighting in the Battle of Chickamauga.
Visitors will also be introduced to how the flora, fauna, and geological formations provided both barriers and benefits to the opposing armies.
Comfortable, supportive footwear, water, and clothing appropriate for the weather are recommended.
